For her birthday Lily got a kit to raise butterflies from her Aunt Mary and Uncle Donald. So in June we raised butterflies and I think it was as amazing to me as it was to the kids. They started out as live caterpillars we got in the mail and we watched them crawl around and eat and eat. It was really incredible watching them then go through their cocoon stage (I couldn't believe how fast it all took place). Then we just waited with anticipation for them to emerge as butterflies (we even took them camping with us so that we wouldn't miss the big event). About a day after we returned from our trip the butterflies started to emerge (one the first day and the remaining four the day after). We fed them and watched them fly around in their butterfly habitat for two days and then released them to our yard. It took them a few minutes to realize that they could fly free, but one by one they each took off. One of them landed very close in the grass and then climbed on Lily's finger when she went over to see it (pictures #3 and #4)- she loved that! But eventually they all went and about a week later Joe saw one of them flying near the house (maybe they liked our company?)!:) What a fun experience!
